Duʿā

The sky changes. The reader remains.

Duʿā as breath — a page that shifts with the day so its light meets you where you are.

Small words for the day

For every corner of the day.

On waking

Alḥamdulillāhi lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhi n-nushūr

All praise is for Allah, who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection.

Bukhārī 6312

Before sleep

Bismika Allāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Bukhārī 6324

Before eating

Bismillāh; if forgotten: Bismillāhi awwalahu wa ākhirahu

In the name of Allah; and if one forgets: In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end.

Abū Dāwūd 3767

After eating

Alḥamdulillāhi lladhī aṭʿamanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah

All praise is for Allah who fed me this and provided it for me without any might or power on my part.

Abū Dāwūd 4023

Entering the mosque

Allāhumma-ftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatik

O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

Leaving home

Bismillāhi tawakkaltu ʿalā Allāh, lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no might and no power except with Allah.

Seeing rain

Allāhumma ṣayyiban nāfiʿan

O Allah, let it be a beneficial rain.

Bukhārī 1032

When distressed

Lā ilāha illā Allāhu l-ʿaẓīmu l-ḥalīm, lā ilāha illā Allāhu rabbu l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīm, lā ilāha illā Allāhu rabbu s-samāwāti wa rabbu l-arḍi wa rabbu l-ʿarshi l-karīm

There is no god but Allah, the Great, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne.

Bukhārī 6345
