١

وَالنَّجۡمِ اِذَا هَوٰيۙ‏

Wa An-Najmi 'Idhā Hawá

By the star when it descends

٢

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمۡ وَمَا غَوٰيۚ‏

Mā Đalla Şāĥibukum Wa Mā Ghawá

Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred

٣

وَمَا يَنۡطِقُ عَنِ الۡهَوٰيؕۚ‏

Wa Mā Yanţiqu `Ani Al-Hawá

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination

٤

اِنۡ هُوَ اِلَّا وَحۡيٌ يُّوۡحٰيۙ‏

In Huwa 'Illā Waĥyun Yūĥá

It is not but a revelation revealed

٥

عَلَّمَهٗ شَدِيۡدُ الۡقُوٰيۙ‏

Allamahu Shadīdu Al-Quwá

Taught to him by one intense in strength

٦

ذُوۡ مِرَّةٍؕ فَاسۡتَوٰيۙ‏

Dhū Mirratin Fāstawá

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

٧

وَهُوَ بِالۡاُفُقِ الۡاَعۡلٰيؕ‏

Wa Huwa Bil-'Ufuqi Al-'A`lá

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon

٨

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلّٰيۙ‏

Thumma Danā Fatadallá

Then he approached and descended

٩

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوۡسَيۡنِ اَوۡ اَدۡنٰيۚ‏

Fakāna Qāba Qawsayni 'Aw 'Adná

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer

١٠

فَاَوۡحٰ٘ي اِلٰي عَبۡدِهٖ مَا٘ اَوۡحٰيؕ‏

Fa'awĥá 'Ilá `Abdihi Mā 'Awĥá

And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed

١١

مَا كَذَبَ الۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَاٰي

Mā Kadhaba Al-Fu'uādu Mā Ra'á

The heart did not lie [about] what it saw

١٢

اَفَتُمٰرُوۡنَهٗ عَلٰي مَا يَرٰي

Afatumārūnahu `Alá Mā Yará

So will you dispute with him over what he saw

١٣

وَلَقَدۡ رَاٰهُ نَزۡلَةً اُخۡرٰيۙ‏

Wa Laqad Ra'āhu Nazlatan 'Ukhrá

And he certainly saw him in another descent

١٤

عِنۡدَ سِدۡرَةِ الۡمُنۡتَهٰي

Inda Sidrati Al-Muntahá

At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary

١٥

عِنۡدَهَا جَنَّةُ الۡمَاۡوٰيؕ‏

Indahā Jannatu Al-Ma'wá

Near it is the Garden of Refuge

١٦

اِذۡ يَغۡشَي السِّدۡرَةَ مَا يَغۡشٰيۙ‏

Idh Yaghshá As-Sidrata Mā Yaghshá

When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]

١٧

مَا زَاغَ الۡبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغٰي

Mā Zāgha Al-Başaru Wa Mā Ţaghá

The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]

١٨

لَقَدۡ رَاٰي مِنۡ اٰيٰتِ رَبِّهِ الۡكُبۡرٰي

Laqad Ra'á Min 'Āyāti Rabbihi Al-Kubrá

He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord

١٩

اَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ اللّٰتَ وَالۡعُزّٰيۙ‏

Afara'aytumu Al-Lāta Wa Al-`Uzzá

So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza

٢٠

وَمَنٰوةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الۡاُخۡرٰي

Wa Manāata Ath-Thālithata Al-'Ukhrá

And Manat, the third - the other one

٢١

اَلَكُمُ الذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ الۡاُنۡثٰي

Alakumu Adh-Dhakaru Wa Lahu Al-'Unthá

Is the male for you and for Him the female

٢٢

تِلۡكَ اِذًا قِسۡمَةٌ ضِيۡزٰي

Tilka 'Idhāan Qismatun Đīzá

That, then, is an unjust division

٢٣

اِنۡ هِيَ اِلَّا٘ اَسۡمَآءٌ سَمَّيۡتُمُوۡهَا٘ اَنۡتُمۡ وَاٰبَآؤُكُمۡ مَّا٘ اَنۡزَلَ اللّٰهُ بِهَا مِنۡ سُلۡطٰنٍؕ اِنۡ يَّتَّبِعُوۡنَ اِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَي الۡاَنۡفُسُۚ وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُمۡ مِّنۡ رَّبِّهِمُ الۡهُدٰيؕ‏

In Hiya 'Illā 'Asmā'un Sammaytumūhā 'Antum Wa 'Ābā'uukum Mā 'Anzala Allāhu Bihā Min Sulţānin 'In Yattabi`ūna 'Illā Až-Žanna Wa Mā Tahwá Al-'Anfusu Wa Laqad Jā'ahum Min Rabbihimu Al-Hudá

They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance

٢٤

اَمۡ لِلۡاِنۡسَانِ مَا تَمَنّٰيؗۖ‏

Am Lil'insāni Mā Tamanná

Or is there for man whatever he wishes

٢٥

فَلِلّٰهِ الۡاٰخِرَةُ وَالۡاُوۡلٰيࣖ‏

Falillāhi Al-'Ākhiratu Wa Al-'Ūlá

Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]

٢٦

وَكَمۡ مِّنۡ مَّلَكٍ فِي السَّمٰوٰتِ لَا تُغۡنِيۡ شَفَاعَتُهُمۡ شَيۡـًٔا اِلَّا مِنۭۡ بَعۡدِ اَنۡ يَّاۡذَنَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنۡ يَّشَآءُ وَيَرۡضٰي

Wa Kam Min Malakin Fī As-Samāwāti Lā Tughnī Shafā`atuhum Shay'āan 'Illā Min Ba`di 'An Ya'dhana Allāhu Liman Yashā'u Wa Yarđá

And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves

٢٧

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِالۡاٰخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّوۡنَ الۡمَلٰٓئِكَةَ تَسۡمِيَةَ الۡاُنۡثٰي

Inna Al-Ladhīna Lā Yu'uminūna Bil-'Ākhirati Layusammūna Al-Malā'ikata Tasmiyata Al-'Unthá

Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names

٢٨

وَمَا لَهُمۡ بِهٖ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍؕ اِنۡ يَّتَّبِعُوۡنَ اِلَّا الظَّنَّۚ وَاِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغۡنِيۡ مِنَ الۡحَقِّ شَيۡـًٔاۚ‏

Wa Mā Lahum Bihi Min `Ilmin 'In Yattabi`ūna 'Illā Až-Žanna Wa 'Inna Až-Žanna Lā Yughnī Mina Al-Ĥaqqi Shay'āan

And they have thereof no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all

٢٩

فَاَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡ مَّنۡ تَوَلّٰي ࣢ۙ عَنۡ ذِكۡرِنَا وَلَمۡ يُرِدۡ اِلَّا الۡحَيٰوةَ الدُّنۡيَاؕ‏

Fa'a`riđ `An Man Tawallá `An Dhikrinā Wa Lam Yurid 'Illā Al-Ĥayāata Ad-Dunyā

So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life

٣٠

ذٰلِكَ مَبۡلَغُهُمۡ مِّنَ الۡعِلۡمِؕ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ اَعۡلَمُ بِمَنۡ ضَلَّ عَنۡ سَبِيۡلِهٖ وَهُوَ اَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ اهۡتَدٰي

Dhālika Mablaghuhum Mina Al-`Ilmi 'Inna Rabbaka Huwa 'A`lamu Biman Đalla `An Sabīlihi Wa Huwa 'A`lamu Bimani Ahtadá

That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided

٣١

وَلِلّٰهِ مَا فِي السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِي الۡاَرۡضِۙ لِيَجۡزِيَ الَّذِيۡنَ اَسَآءُوۡا بِمَا عَمِلُوۡا وَيَجۡزِيَ الَّذِيۡنَ اَحۡسَنُوۡا بِالۡحُسۡنٰيۚ‏

Wa Lillahi Mā Fī As-Samāwāti Wa Mā Fī Al-'Arđi Liyajziya Al-Ladhīna 'Asā'ū Bimā `Amilū Wa Yajziya Al-Ladhīna 'Aĥsanū Bil-Ĥusná

And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward]

٣٢

اَلَّذِيۡنَ يَجۡتَنِبُوۡنَ كَبٰٓئِرَ الۡاِثۡمِ وَالۡفَوَاحِشَ اِلَّا اللَّمَمَؕ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الۡمَغۡفِرَةِؕ هُوَ اَعۡلَمُ بِكُمۡ اِذۡ اَنۡشَاَكُمۡ مِّنَ الۡاَرۡضِ وَاِذۡ اَنۡتُمۡ اَجِنَّةٌ فِيۡ بُطُوۡنِ اُمَّهٰتِكُمۡۚ فَلَا تُزَكُّوۡ٘ا اَنۡفُسَكُمۡؕ هُوَ اَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقٰيࣖ‏

Al-Ladhīna Yajtanibūna Kabā'ira Al-'Ithmi Wa Al-Fawāĥisha 'Illā Al-Lamama 'Inna Rabbaka Wāsi`u Al-Maghfirati Huwa 'A`lamu Bikum 'Idh 'Ansha'akum Mina Al-'Arđi Wa 'Idh 'Antum 'Ajinnatun Fī Buţūni 'Ummahātikum Falā Tuzakkū 'Anfusakum Huwa 'A`lamu Bimani Attaqá

Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him

٣٣

اَفَرَءَيۡتَ الَّذِيۡ تَوَلّٰيۙ‏

Afara'ayta Al-Ladhī Tawallá

Have you seen the one who turned away

٣٤

وَاَعۡطٰي قَلِيۡلًا وَّاَكۡدٰي

Wa 'A`ţá Qalīlāan Wa 'Akdá

And gave a little and [then] refrained

٣٥

اَعِنۡدَهٗ عِلۡمُ الۡغَيۡبِ فَهُوَ يَرٰي

A`indahu `Ilmu Al-Ghaybi Fahuwa Yará

Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees

٣٦

اَمۡ لَمۡ يُنَبَّاۡ بِمَا فِيۡ صُحُفِ مُوۡسٰيۙ‏

Am Lam Yunabba' Bimā Fī Şuĥufi Mūsá

Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses

٣٧

وَاِبۡرٰهِيۡمَ الَّذِيۡ وَفّٰ٘يۙ‏

Wa 'Ibrāhīma Al-Ladhī Wa Ffá

And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations]

٣٨

اَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِّزۡرَ اُخۡرٰيۙ‏

Allā Taziru Wāziratun Wizra 'Ukhrá

That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another

٣٩

وَاَنۡ لَّيۡسَ لِلۡاِنۡسَانِ اِلَّا مَا سَعٰيۙ‏

Wa 'An Laysa Lil'insāni 'Illā Mā Sa`á

And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives

٤٠

وَاَنَّ سَعۡيَهٗ سَوۡفَ يُرٰي

Wa 'Anna Sa`yahu Sawfa Yurá

And that his effort is going to be seen

٤١

ثُمَّ يُجۡزٰىهُ الۡجَزَآءَ الۡاَوۡفٰيۙ‏

Thumma Yujzāhu Al-Jazā'a Al-'Awfá

Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense

٤٢

وَاَنَّ اِلٰي رَبِّكَ الۡمُنۡتَهٰيۙ‏

Wa 'Anna 'Ilá Rabbika Al-Muntahá

And that to your Lord is the finality

٤٣

وَاَنَّهٗ هُوَ اَضۡحَكَ وَاَبۡكٰيۙ‏

Wa 'Annahu Huwa 'Ađĥaka Wa 'Abká

And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep

٤٤

وَاَنَّهٗ هُوَ اَمَاتَ وَاَحۡيَاۙ‏

Wa 'Annahu Huwa 'Amāta Wa 'Aĥyā

And that it is He who causes death and gives life

٤٥

وَاَنَّهٗ خَلَقَ الزَّوۡجَيۡنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالۡاُنۡثٰيۙ‏

Wa 'Annahu Khalaqa Az-Zawjayni Adh-Dhakara Wa Al-'Unthá

And that He creates the two mates - the male and female

٤٦

مِنۡ نُّطۡفَةٍ اِذَا تُمۡنٰيࣕ‏

Min Nuţfatin 'Idhā Tumná

From a sperm-drop when it is emitted

٤٧

وَاَنَّ عَلَيۡهِ النَّشۡاَةَ الۡاُخۡرٰيۙ‏

Wa 'Anna `Alayhi An-Nash'ata Al-'Ukhrá

And that [incumbent] upon Him is the next creation

٤٨

وَاَنَّهٗ هُوَ اَغۡنٰي وَاَقۡنٰيۙ‏

Wa 'Annahu Huwa 'Aghná Wa 'Aqná

And that it is He who enriches and suffices

٤٩

وَاَنَّهٗ هُوَ رَبُّ الشِّعۡرٰيۙ‏

Wa 'Annahu Huwa Rabbu Ash-Shi`rá

And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius

٥٠

وَاَنَّهٗ٘ اَهۡلَكَ عَادَا اِۨلۡاُوۡلٰيۙ‏

Wa 'Annahu 'Ahlaka `Ādāan Al-'Ūlá

And that He destroyed the first [people of] 'Aad

٥١

وَثَمُوۡدَا۠ فَمَا٘ اَبۡقٰيۙ‏

Wa Thamūda Famā 'Abqá

And Thamud - and He did not spare [them]

٥٢

وَقَوۡمَ نُوۡحٍ مِّنۡ قَبۡلُؕ اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا هُمۡ اَظۡلَمَ وَاَطۡغٰيؕ‏

Wa Qawma Nūĥin Min Qablu 'Innahum Kānū Hum 'Ažlama Wa 'Aţghá

And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing

٥٣

وَالۡمُؤۡتَفِكَةَ اَهۡوٰيۙ‏

Wa Al-Mu'utafikata 'Ahwá

And the overturned towns He hurled down

٥٤

فَغَشّٰىهَا مَا غَشّٰيۚ‏

Faghashāhā Mā Ghashá

And covered them by that which He covered

٥٥

فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارٰي

Fabi'ayyi 'Ālā'i Rabbika Tatamārá

Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt

٥٦

هٰذَا نَذِيۡرٌ مِّنَ النُّذُرِ الۡاُوۡلٰي

Hādhā Nadhīrun Mina An-Nudhuri Al-'Ūlá

This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners

٥٧

اَزِفَتِ الۡاٰزِفَةُۚ‏

Azifati Al-'Āzifahu

The Approaching Day has approached

٥٨

لَيۡسَ لَهَا مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ كَاشِفَةٌؕ‏

Laysa Lahā Min Dūni Allāhi Kāshifahun

Of it, [from those] besides Allah, there is no remover

٥٩

اَفَمِنۡ هٰذَا الۡحَدِيۡثِ تَعۡجَبُوۡنَۙ‏

Afamin Hādhā Al-Ĥadīthi Ta`jabūna

Then at this statement do you wonder

٦٠

وَتَضۡحَكُوۡنَ وَلَا تَبۡكُوۡنَۙ‏

Wa Tađĥakūna Wa Lā Tabkūna

And you laugh and do not weep

٦١

وَاَنۡتُمۡ سٰمِدُوۡنَ

Wa 'Antum Sāmidūna

While you are proudly sporting

٦٢

فَاسۡجُدُوۡا لِلّٰهِ وَاعۡبُدُوۡاࣛࣖ‏

Fāsjudū Lillāhi Wa A`budū

So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him]

صَدَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-ʿaẓīm

Allah, the Magnificent, has spoken the truth.

ʿAbd al-Basit
